Mask of the Dragon is a Young Adult novel by Ashleigh D.J. Cutler. Mask of the Dragon is the first book in what is to be a series. Cutler has written three books, all published through Crystal Prism Publications. To date, all of her titles incorporate various social topics inspired by her years in high school. The book is a 236 page contemporary novel with a hint of supernatural. It is a story centered around friendship.
The novel about growing into yourself and becoming confident. While including themes of self-discovery it, has a twist. With a touch of supernatural and a hint of mystery this novel is sure to take most readers out of their comfort zone. The story follows sixteen-year-old Abigail Palmer as she learns to compensate for all that she has lost in her life. Aimed towards teens the story takes on a rather odd but interesting theme merging a tale of friendship with the supernatural. This story had a brilliant plot line that made unexpected twists and turns. Mask of the Dragon also had very realistic characters, meaning they interacted with each other in ways that seemed natural but also gave the reader more information on them. Personally I was able to relate with Abigail because we are both the same age and at the time I was reading this I was working on getting my drivers license too! I think another thing I liked about this story was that the minor characters were developed quite nicely. It is always a relief to see an author who actually cares about their minor characters. I was pleased with the story and would recommend this book for readers interested in supernatural books. I enjoyed Mask of the Dragon, and the realness of each character. While the book is targeted at teens and young adults, pre-teens can definitely find enjoyment in the story. It is the first book in what will eventually become a trilogy. I loved the uniqueness of the story. I think just the idea behind this story will inspire readers and writers to explore new territory and go out of their comfort zone.
