Synopsis
When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.
My Thooughts
A Court Of Thorns And Roses is the first book in a trilogy, of which the author has published two of the three books. The third book is set to release in 2017. The series is written by Sarah J Maas who is well known for her wildly popular Throne of Glass novels. The book is loosely based on Disney’s Beauty and The Beast. The novel is 419 pages and is currently available in print, multiple electronic book formats and audio.
The story follows eighteen year old Feyre, a human girl, through the transition from a once wealthy life to a dirt poor life. Feyre is forced to provide for her family, which includes her handicapped father and two ungrateful older sisters. In Feyre’s world, humans and the immortal Fae lands should completely separated by a magical barrier. Except it has somehow become porous and the two races are slowly intermingling again. This is not a good thing, as ancient grudges and recent insults flare, Feyre is caught in the middle. For me, Feyre as the protagonist was hard to relate to. Her main love interest was another person that didn’t seem consistent and well integrated with the storyline. In the second book in the series, A Court of Mist and Fury, the reader will better understand this character. However in this book, I felt that he didn’t contribute to the plot line much. I didn’t particularly care for any of the characters, save Lucien. There are a few unexpected plot twists in this book that contributed to the novel’s story line. While I enjoyed reading the final battle, the hero vs. villain situation didn’t make that much sense to me. I wasn’t drawn into the story until the very end. As a stand-alone read, I would not recommend this book. However, (small spoiler alert) I’ve just finished the second book, and believe that fans of Sara Maas will find the next book contains the spark and magic we came to enjoy from her first series.
